It is common to refer clients to the other counselors in counseling.However,there are many negative consequences if referrals of counseling are unethical.The possible effects of referrals on clients and counselors are described in this article.And the evolution of referral ethics in professional codes of ethics is presented.The reasons of referrals and the process of referrals are the main factors to influence the referral.Coping strategies for successful referrals are discussed.There are some suggestions for agencies and counselors which are benefit for counselors to refer clients successfully.Theoretical reference and practical guidance for referral can be obtained.
