The anomalous damage patterns developed by the focusing of seismic waves due to deep and shallow seated synclinal basement topography were reported during the Northridge earthquake of 1994 and the Nisqually earthquake of 2001,respectively.This paper presents the role of sediment velocity, depth and geometry of the basement topography in basement focusing effects on ground motion characteristics. The conclusions are as follows:In an unbounded medium,(1)when the geometry of the basin is semicircle, the focusing effect of the basin decreases gradually with the increase of sediment velocity.Under the fixed chord length, the focusing effect of the basin decreases with the increase of radius of curvature.(2)When the geometry of the basin interface is semi-ellipse,the focus of a basin can be summarized within a given region.
