The ballet Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Matthew Bourne overturns the original play of William Shakespeare, and presents a passionate contemporary version of the love story. The social structure of the characters coincides with Plato’s"cave"metaphor, and the discussion of rules and human nature unfolds step by step through body performance. This paper starts with Matthew Bourne’s unique Western philosophy-art perspective, which includes four dualities:the cave metaphor vs.rules, the cave metaphor vs.liberation, the cave metaphor vs.the pursuit of kindness, and liberation vs.sacrifice under the absolute spirit. This paper also tries to interpret the metaphors and the social implications of Matthew Byrne’s dancing forms from the perspectives of Freud’s theory of instinct,Foucault’s"prison,"and the rules of body and power.
