Freedom and radicalism are important characteristics of experimental filmmakers called "free radicals" by Pip Chodorov. Stan Brakhage, as a representative figure, mainly reflects his freedom and radicalism in his exploration of human visual ability and viewing behavior. He used light, shadow and color to construct metaphors on vision to help viewers expand their perceptual experience. He also reminded to return to vision, emphasizing the importance of vision itself as a purpose. Brakhage’s moving image experiment highlights vision itself, pointing to the reality of perception. The tension between the experimental film and the audience comes from the difference in the visual experience of the creator and the viewer. Therefore, the experimental film has to face the freedom with limit and radicalism being incorporated.
