As the official film agency in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Film Unit embodied Cold War culture and reshaped the image of post-war Hong Kong. From a historical perspective, the unit followed the wartime propaganda strategy and mainly produced films that were easy to understand. In terms of narrative, the film reflects both colonial and Cold War imprints, showing the colonial government’s construction in Hong Kong, as well as conveying modern consciousness. The film’s promotional strategy is a mobile screening team that both attracts local audiences and constructs imaginary of the colonial government and self-identity. By reviewing the production and screening of Hong Kong Film Unit, this paper hopes to provide a glimpse into the complex history of Hong Kong’s cold war culture.
