In September 2007, the remnant stone tablet was unearthed at the Gangcheng Dam site of the Yuan dynasty in Ningyang, Shandong province. The remnants stone tablet was inscribed with Records on Renovating the Sluice of Gangcheng Dam written by Ma Zhizhen, a deputy to the chief of the Water Affairs Office in the Yuan dynasty. The remaining inscription on the tablet reveals the information about Ma Zhizhen’s career history, the digging process and relative management measures of canals in Shandong(Jizhou River and Huitong River) in the Yuan dynasty, the construction and management of Gangcheng dam(sluice) and so on. In the Yuan dynasty, the digging of canals in Shandong was a key project for the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and Gangcheng Dam was the hub of water distribution for the canal. However, there are few records of the project and Ma Zhizhen as an important planner, organizer and manager of the project. The discovery of the remnant tablet provides a large number of extremely valuable first-hand historical data for the study of Ma Zhizhen’s lifestory, the historical background and specific process of digging canals in Shandong and the management of canals and grain transporting. The author makes pubic the tablet inscription for the first time in this paper and conducts a textual research of the historical facts recorded on the remnant tablet on the basis of the documentary records to supplement the missing and correct mistakes in handed down documents.
