The first Jiguge edition of Shuowen [说文] was printed around the 13 th year of the Chongzhen period(1640) in the Ming dynasty, based mainly on the Song dynasty small character edition from the Wang Chang collection. After being revised and corrected five times by Mao Yi, the revised Jiguge edition of Shuowen was printed probably after the 16 th year of the Shunzhi period(1659) in Qing dynasty. While the first edition had become rare from the Qianlong to Jiaqing period onward, the revised edition was widely distributed among the public and had almost replaced Li Tao’s Shuowen Jiezi in Phonological Order The seal script of Jiguge edition of Shuowen, similar in style to the Qin dynasty stone carvings, continues the handwriting style of the Song dynasty edition of Shuowen and shows greater carving skills. In its circulation during the Qianlong to Jiaqing period, the Jiguge edition was taken as reference for both studies on characters and creative calligraphic seal script.
