林语堂早期翻译观考论

A Survey of Lin Yutang’s View of Translation in 1920s

本文聚焦林语堂的一篇早期译论《对于译名划一的一个紧要提议》,概述其音译方案的主要内容,提炼译论主张的四项原则,分析林语堂的语言学学养和20世纪20年代的社会诉求,评价该译论的贡献和局限性,以丰富林语堂翻译思想内涵,提升林语堂个人翻译思想发展史的完整性,提倡以跨文本的历史观综合考察译者翻译思想的发展脉络。

This paper focuses on an article on translation by Lin Yutang in his youth,entitled Duiyu yiming huayi de yige jinyao tiyi( An Urgent Proposal on the Unification of Translated Names). It gives a review of the major points in Lin’s article,summarizes the four principles advocated,and analyzes the dual impacts of Lin’s cultivation as a linguist and the needs of Chinese society in its preliminary phase of modernization. Based on these explorations,this paper evaluates the contributions as well as the limitations of Lin’s article,aiming at a more profound interpretation of Lin’s thought on translation. Moreover,it calls for both a multi-textual method and a diachronic perspective to be employed to analyze Lin Yutang’s view of translation.
