On Yi Shi in the Northern Dynasties Seeing from Inscriptions of Statures

北朝的很多造像记中可见"邑师"一职,他们多来源于义邑附近的寺院,通常由那些影响较大的僧侣充任,主要负责邑众的指导与教化。同一义邑中的邑师之间地位可能平等,也可能存在层级差别。不同义邑的邑师所起的作用也不尽相同,有的是精神上的导师,有的则是社群的实际领导者。

Yi Shi can be seen in many inscriptions in the Northern Dynasties. Most of them come from the temples nearby and usually are nuns and monks with great influence. They are in charge of guidance and enlightenment. The status of different Yi Shi may be equal or hierarchical. The role played by YiShi in different Yiyi is also different. Some of them are spiritual mentors, others are actual leaders of the groups.
