A Chronicle of the First Decisive Campaign of Textbook of the People’s Republic of China

1954—1957年的新中国第一次教材会战,根据党中央决策,由教育部组织实施,选调全国200多位学科专家、一线名师和专业编辑,依托人民教育出版社这个教材专门机构,主要就中小学教学大纲、教科书、教学参考书进行了协同攻关,编写出版了新中国第一套统编教材。这次教材会战大致经过了组建领导班子与选调编审人员、制订工作规划和编辑出版计划、组织学习活动与检查现行教材错误、全面开展各学科教材编订、出版发行和使用等阶段,补齐了新中国成立后教材建设的短板,开启了我国中小学教科书"一纲一本、统编统用"的新时代,也为今后教材工作专业化发展培养和储备了一批人才,成为新中国教育事业集中力量办大事的一个范例。

The first decisive campaign of textbook of the People’s Republic of China was organized and implemented by the Ministry of Education according to the decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1954-1957.More than 200 subject specialists,famous in-service teachers and professional editors all over the country,relying on the People’s Education Press,a specialized agency for textbook compilation and research,have conducted collaborative research mainly on primary and secondary school syllabuses,textbooks and teaching reference books,and prepared and published the first set of unified textbooks in the People’s Republic of China.This decisive campaign of textbook has roughly gone through the stages of forming a leadership team and selecting editors and reviewers,formulating work plans and editing and publishing plans,organizing study activities and checking the errors of existing textbooks,and comprehensively carrying out the compilation,publication,distribution and use of textbooks of various subjects,making up for the shortcomings of textbook construction after the founding of the People’s Republic of China,and opening up a new era of"preparing only one set of textbooks for one syllabus,with unified compilation and use"for primary and secondary school textbooks in China.The campaign also trained and reserved a number of talents for the professional development of textbooks in the future,and became an example of concentrated efforts to do great things in the cause of education in China.
