While the closed narrative that has been traditionally adopted in regional museums helps centralize the interpretation of the regional culture, it has obvious"vision limitations". The integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region requires the construction of a"Jiangnan culture"with contemporary values based on modern and global visions, emphasizing the interaction between regional cultures and promoting the transformation of regional museum narratives from closed to open. The regional museums in China can learn from the A History of the World in 100 Objects exhibition from the British Museum to re-construct their narrative mechanism focusing on the openness of the narrative space, the dialogue of the narrative structure, and cross-media narrative, to enable the museum to reflect the regional history as well as the present and be more active and participatory. The approaches to the construction of a holistic museum narrative of the "Jiangnan culture" are discussed through global conversations, themed exhibitions, and contemporary narrative with examples from museums in the Yangtze River Delta region. New directions for museum open narrative such as women’s history, museum merchandise shows, and the relevance of objects are explored.
