Chen Shouzhu,a drama theorist,created a large number of modern novels,but was forgotten by the academic world for a long time.His novels were changeable in styles and rich in content,with not only subtle insight into personal mind,but also profound revelation of social conditions.From sentimentality to rationality,he constantly explored new aesthetic styles and created a complicated ukiyo-e painting of the world.In the 1920s,he explored young people’s yearning for love with romantic and sentimental brush strokes.In the 1930s,he reflected various problems in the countryside,revealed the miserable fate of peasants,and drew the difficult course of the awakening and resistance of the masses in the Anti-Japanese War era.In the 1940s,he turned to“humorous”and“satiric”life comedy to expose the dark and ugly human nature.Chen Shouzhu’s novel style exhibited his unique personality,his talent as a novelist,and also reflected the changing track of the time.
