Elementary Discussion on Translator’s Adaptation and Selection:Taking YANG Xianyi and Hawkes’English Version of Bai Haitang as an Example

生态翻译学理论认为翻译是以译者为中心、译者适应与选择交替进行的循环过程。《红楼梦》英译本有很多,其中以杨宪益夫妇和霍克斯及其女婿约翰·闵福德的全译本影响最大。究其原因,是译者对整个翻译生态环境适应和选择的结果。

According to eco-translatology, translation is defined as a selection activity of the translator’s adaptation to fit the eco-environment of translating and it takes the translator as the centre. Since the advent of A Dream of Red Mansions, there exist many English versions. Among them, the two complete versions by YANG Xianyi and his wife and David Hawkes and his son-in-law John Minford are the most influential. Investigate its reason, it’s the result of the translators’ adaptation and selection to the whole translational eco-environment.
