A Study on“Defamiliarization”in John Banville’s“The Sea”

John Banville with the writing technique of“defamiliarization”presents the strange past and reality in the protagonist’s eyes with a disordered space-time story line and a nearly strange writing way.This paper mainly analyzes the application of“defamiliarization”skills in“The Sea”from the perspectives of language,narration and characters,and shows Banville’s attention and opinions on the themes of human survival such as life and death,existence and loss,warmth and indifference in modern society.
