Extractive translation is one of the effective strategies in the novel translation in National Translation Program( NTP). The Plains Are Ablaze,an English version of Ping Yuan Lie Huo translated by Sidney Shapiro which is published in the journal Chinese Literature,as a sample of extractive translation, satisfies or remolds readers ’cognitive framework by optimizing the narrative structure of the novel. The paper, from the perspective of cognitive narratology, attempts to explore the reasons for and effects of extractive translation from three dimensions, namely the poetics of target language, ideological compromise and political concern. It concludes that extractive translation involves cognitive narrative adjustment based on the shared ground and differences between source and target poetics, and the case of the journal version of The Plains Are Ablaze serves as empirical illustration of the concept of"Translation is Rewriting"which is also identified by Shapiro. The paper is to shed light on the Chinese literature"going out"in terms of strategy and approach.
