The Pinacoteca de S?o Paulo, located in the downtown of S?o Paulo, is a neoclassical building built at the end of the 19 th century. Paulo Mendes da Rocha performed the conservation and renewal design between 1994 and 1998. This paper focuses on the design strategy of "spatial transformation, " analyzing the historical changes of the heritage space and the changes of the spatial structure of the city. This strategy fixed the contradiction between the heritage architectural space and the contemporary functions and the spatial structure of the city of S?o Paulo, aesthetically transforming the heritage from "the city made of monuments" to "the monumentality of the city." Based on Paulo’s discourse and academic thought, this article seeks to explore the theoretical foundation for the renewal strategy, which involves a subtle alignment between heritage authenticity and the concept of ‘constructive morality.’ The theoretical foundation also refers to the historical turn of the S?o Paulo School, the architect’s critical approach to Brazil’s colonial heritage, and the exploration of a Latin American modernity.
