A Feminist Analysis of Rochester’s Character Flaws and Physical Defects in“Jane Eyre”

作为女性主义文学的先驱,夏洛蒂·勃朗特在《简·爱》中塑造了一个独立和反抗的女性形象,吸引了众多学者从女性主义去研究这一角色。但是相比较而言,对于小说中的主要男性角色罗切斯特的研究却比较少。与之前小说中男主角的绅士形象不同,罗切斯特可以说是个"暴君",他有着明显的性格缺陷,小说最后,一场大火还给他造成了身体上的缺陷。本文从女性主义出发,对小说中罗切斯特的性格和身体缺陷进行解读,探讨女性主义文学作品中,这一新型男性形象存在的原因和意义。

As the forerunner of feminist literature,Charlotte Bronte created an independent and rebellious heroine in“Jane Eyre”.Many scholars have been attracted and studied the female image from feminism,but comparatively few have ever discussed the major male image Rochester.Heroes in the former novels were usually gentlemen,but Rochester could be called a tyrant with obvious character flaws.In the end of the novel,he was also physically handicapped by a fire.Based on feminism,this paper analyzes the character flaws and physical defects of Rochester and explores the reasons and significance of the existence of such a new male image in feminist literature.
