In the Weeds are Singing,costumes are one of the important carriers for the author Doris Lessing to write about social reality and express social worries.It focuses on analyzing how the costumes in the novel reproduce the changes in the colonial power relations in Africa in the middle of the 20th century.Clothing is the product of a trade-off between people’s personal preferences and specific social rules.The choice of clothing by people from different classes and races in the African colonies broke the ideological label of the original group to shape and restrain individuals,subverted the racial class boundaries in the colonial system,and conveyed Lessing’s humanistic care for the existence of individuals.
