Two Kinds of Misunderstanding about the Future of Public Library

信息传播的数字化、网络化,以及公众阅读方式的改变,在图书馆界引发了对行业边缘化的担忧,并由此产生了过度追逐新技术的倾向。近几年的统计数据显示,公众对纸质图书和传统图书馆服务的需求并没有减弱,而是呈小幅增长的态势。从行业竞争、经济效益和用户体验角度分析,以牺牲传统服务为代价,盲目追求数字化、虚拟化的做法是本末倒置。正确的做法应该是发挥图书馆纸质图书和阅览空间的资源优势,利用新技术提升传统服务的效率和品质。

The digitization and networking of information dissemination,and the change of public reading modes has caused concerns on libraries being marginalized.Thus there has been a trend on over-chasing new techniques on library development.Statistics in recent years show that the demand for paper books and traditional library services has not reduced,but increased slightly.By analyzing the present situation from industry competition,economic benefits and user experience,we find that pursuing digitization and virtualization blindly at the cost of traditional service is putting the cart before the horse.The right way is to retain the resource advantages of paper books and reading space,and to use new techniques to increase efficiency and quality of traditional library services.
