A'ai Cave was built in the period of Protectorate General to Pacify the West in Tang Dynasty. It was located in the hinterland of Quici. Its theme of frescos was deeply influenced by Buddhist art in the Central Plains. The shape, theme and painting techniques of the caves all reflect the characteristics of the murals of the Mogao Grottoes in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The murals in A'ai Cave are strong evidence of the eastward reverse spread of Buddhism.
