Most of the wild ancient tea trees found in the main producing areas of Pu fer tea belong to Dali tea.Dali tea is a tea species equal to Chinese tea and Pu'er tea in plant classification.The type specimen of Dali tea was collected near Gattong Temple,Cangshan,Dali by G.Friest in the early 20th centuty.In 1917,W.W.Smith identified the specimen and named it T.aliensis(the original scientific name of Dali tea),which became a new variety of camellia plants.In 1925,it was revised as Camellia taliensis(W.W.Mithgf)Melchipr by British Melchipr.
