Homeland identification is a core issue for immigrant writers. As globalization develops, overseas Chinese writers are inclined to applaud a de-rooting discourse and to re-root themselves worldwide, which demonstrates a cosmopolitan homeland perspective. With a close reading of memoirs by Shirley Lim and Li-Young Lee,this paper intends to explore how overseas Chinese writers identify their homelands during their multi-transnational movements as re-immigrants.This paper points out that these overseas Chinese writers are placed in a contradictory stage between an optimistic de-rooting claim and a painful rootless emotion as they cross borders. On the one hand, they cannot easily abandon the roots of their ethnicity;on the other, they are confined by a paradoxical social context of"boundaries nowhere, yet boundaries everywhere".Their respective memoirs expose this dilemma, rebooting complex negotiations between ethnicity, nationality, and the globalized world as it is today.Their texts jointly indicate a vision of rooted cosmopolitanism,by which cosmopolitanism and the identification of a homeland can coexist in a universalized and de-rooting social discourse.
