In Disappearing Moon Cafe,Sky Lee employs various narrative strategies to serve her cultural political purposes.Through a nonlinear narrative, she juxtaposes the self and the collective, the past and the present, and male and female so that readers can have a better understanding of Chinese-Canadian identity and its connection with both the"collective self"and the community’s history. The abundant narratorial intrusion reveals Lee’s position and helps construct her subjectivity as a contemporary Chinese Canadian feminist. The switch from first-person to third-person narration, moreover,is conducive to telling the Chinese community’s history and breaking the community’s silence to resist historical and structural racism in Canadian society.
