In her new work The Silence of the Girls,Pat Barker rewrites and parodies Homer’s epic Iliad from a female perspective.This paper analyzes the female subjectivity of Briseis and the androgyny of Achilles.Representing the sad fate of women in patriarchal society,the novel depicts how the silenced women break male discourse in their own way and how the marginal other canvoice himself or herself by constructing a relationship of intersubjectivity with others.By rewriting the classics,this novel allows us to examine the evolution of history and culture from different perspectives and know better the forms of patriarchy as they manifest in a new environment.
