The Images of Stepmothers in John McGahern’s Novels

约翰·麦加恩(1934—2006)在其发行的第一部小说《警局》和代表作《在女人中》里塑造了两位继母人物。这两位女性人物是其生母与继母的融合,是父权专断社会的“他者”,同时,也是女性主体意识的建构者。她们的形象影射了麦加恩的人生经历,体现了他对父权话语体系下女性生存的看法,观照了作者内心期待爱尔兰社会改变的愿望,是其强烈的社会责任感的表征。

John McGahern created two stepmother characters in his first publicized fiction The Barracks and his most successful work Amongst Women.The two female characters are a fusion of his biological mother and stepmother,“the other”to the society of patriarchal autocracy,and in the mean time also the constructors of female subject consciousness.Through the depiction of the two figures,McGahern narrated his own life experience,manifested his views on women’s status under the system of patriarchal discourse power.Moreover,he expressed his inner desire for social changes in Irish society,which represented his strong sense of social responsibility.
