Through a comprehensive analysis of sancai(three-colored)glazed pottery artifacts unearthed from Tang tombs and kiln sites, this study mainly discusses two modes of production of sancai artifacts and technological transmission between two capitals region.Tang sancai pottery originated in Luoyang;the assemblage was first dominated by various receptacles, later replaced by figurines. At the beginning of the eighth century, production technology of sancai figurines was transmitted to Chang’an.Production costs decreased due to the supply of clay and advanced technology in Chang’an.Therefore, sancai artifacts became popular as burial goods among commoners. After the High Tang, the production of sancai figurines gradually ceased due to a sudden decreased use in mortuary contexts. However, the production of sancai receptacles persisted.
