容三德与马礼逊在华事业之关系

The Relationship of“Yong Sam-Tak”with Robert Morrison’s Career in China

中国助手是中国基督宗教史上从未缺席的角色:他们或为传教士的中文教师,或为传教士从事著译的代笔,或为传教士著译润色词句。就此而言,容三德则不仅仅是马礼逊的中国助手。伦敦期间他担任马礼逊的中文启蒙教师,在马礼逊来华后,为其处理很多在华事务,包括为其合法居留担保、介绍中文教师、购买中文图书及印刷材料、代雇并偷运印刷工匠等,几乎成为马礼逊涉及华人的义务代理人,对马礼逊在华传教事业襄助极大,实为研究基督教早期在华传教史无法绕开的人物。

The Chinese assistants played a role that has never been absent in the History of Christianity in China:they were either Chinese teachers for missionaries,ghostwriters for missionaries,or embellished words for them.In this regard,Yong Sam-Tak is not just Robert Morrison’s Chinese assistant,because in addition to serving as his Chinese teacher.After Robert Morrison came to China,he also handled a lot of things for him,including guaranteeing legal residence,introducing Chinese teachers,buying Chinese books and printing materials,hiring and smuggling printing craftsmen,etc.,have almost became Robert Morrison’s voluntary agents involving Chinese people,they have greatly assisted Robert Morrison’s mission in China and Yong Sam-Tak was actually a character of researching the early history of Christian mission in China who cannot bypass.
