Words’guessing and comprehending is just in line with the profile-base principle in cognitive gram⁃mar.Based on the principle of profile-base,this paper analyzes 11 typical relationships between the profile(new words)and its corresponding base(context clues)in the context of English with abundant examples,thus revealing the cognitive mechanism behind words’guessing and comprehending,deepening readers’understanding ability.
