新旧唐书均称杜牧因从兄杜悰“更历将相”而“不乐”“不平”,杜牧与杜悰关系究竟如何?李德裕会昌执政时未提拔屡建良言的杜牧,当有杜悰偏向牛党的因素。杜牧因病弟孀妹之家累,曾向杜悰求告并得到照应。二人政治才干和理想抱负均大不相同,具有崇高政治理想的杜牧与尸位素餐的杜悰并无多少共同语言;但限于血缘亲情,杜牧对杜悰的负面官声却加以维护,表现出其世故练达的一面。
