Critical attention has long been focused on the influence of music on John Dryden’s dramatic works, while the significance of music for his poetry as well as its various forms has rarely been examined. This paper re-reads A Song for St.Cecilia’s Day and Alexander’s Feast from the perspectives of music and satire, especially in the context of the poet’s other poetic works, critical writings and operatic collaborations. The author discovers Dryden’s two-way effort to temper religious fervor with artistry and to elevate theatrical art to a higher spiritual level, the two of which he combines in order to push Restoration theatre beyond the allegorical mode and accomplish the double duty of entertainment and edification.
