With the help of the simultaneous scene narration of urban space,John Dos Passos’s novel Manhattan Transfer completed the panoramic scanning of modern urban life in New York. The novel’s unique narrative mode has always been praised, but the complex aesthetic logic behind it seems to ignored. With this as the focus and in the historical context, this paper discusses the relationship between the aesthetic appeal of the times expressed in the urban spatialization narrative of Manhattan Transfer and the new space-time characteristics of urban life,as well as the author’s artistic pursuit of the totality of modernism under the fragmented urban theme.
