摘要
在辉格主义的进步视角中,科学是进步的源泉,帝国是科学的母体,科学为帝国征服披上了文明的面纱。2020年6月,新冠疫情漩涡下的美国“黑命贵”运动蔓延至英国,反殖民主义和反帝国主义声浪迭起,英国帝国理工大学在压力下决定放弃已经沿用了百余年的校训:“科学是帝国的无上光荣和保障”(Scientia Imperii Decus et Tutamen)。这一决定,再次将科学与帝国的关系带入人们的视野。
From vehicles of civilizational mission to instruments of domination and cultural hegemony,science and the expansion of empire are inseparable.For developing countries wishing to launch a decolonization agenda and pursue their own development paths,it is necessary to reconceptualize the history of the relationship between science and empire,to reflect deeply on the globalization of the North Atlantic standard,and to clarify the extent to which it is possible to distinguish modernization from Westernization and find a development path truly in line with their own traditions,cultures,and people's needs.
