This paper takes English Literature course as an example of English-mediated instruction(EMI),and discusses the design of teaching activities in EMI courses in consideration of the teaching objectives of specific courses in colleges and universities and the corresponding language ability and cognitive level of students.A questionnaire survey and an interview were conducted among students who took this course.Data collected were analyzed and it was concluded that when EMI courses were difficult, teachers need not pay special attention to the teaching of language.Instead, adopting appropriate instructional strategies and putting more weight on concept and meaning can help students of low and medium English proficiency to gain deeper understanding of the course content.
