The widespread application of facial recognition systems in the era of digital technology has attracted a great deal of attention, which has prompted people to review the relevant discussions of face symbols in China and the West. This discussion is conducive to reviewing real problems and to thinking rationally about the bright future. In Chinese culture, the human face serves as a basis for the social and cultural psychology of human relations. The notion of"face"also serves as a representation of Chinese patriarchal clan ethics and as an externalisation of the symbiotic concept of"harmony without uniformity".In Western culture, the human face is often regarded as a mask,as is symbolised in theatre performances. The face is also regarded as a unique personal symbol that expresses individualism and self-consciousness.The Western face is viewed as a medium to express stimulus-response and symbol interaction in the process of interpersonal communication.Facial images provide a rich source of meanings for both language symbols and non-language symbols. The differences between Chinese and Western face symbols show profound contrasts in society, history and culture.Nevertheless,as humankind increasingly becomes a single community with a shared future,it becomes both possible and necessary to open a dialogue on the signs and meanings we give to the human face. This paper therefore launches a new approach to thinking about face symbols.
