Discussion on Pan Deyu's Acceptance and Criticism of Bai Juyi

嘉道年间的诗论家潘德舆企图以文章挽回世运,变革当时的浮靡文风,有《养一斋诗话》传世。他的诗学思想继承了白居易的现实主义诗学观,强调诗歌的社会功能,重视《诗经》以及诗品和人品的关系,他非常推重白居易的乐府诗,认为白居易的诗歌不止通俗浅率。但是由于所处时代和个人经历与白居易有所区别,他扬弃了白居易思想中佛禅思想的部分,批判了白居易《长恨歌》一类的诗歌。

During the Jiaqing and Daoguang period,Pan Deyu,the author of Yang Yi Zhai Notes on Poems,attempted to save the world with articles and change the prevailing grandiloquent writing style at that time.His poetic thoughts inherited Bai Juyi's views on realistic poetics,emphasizing the social function of poetry,and valuing The Book of Songs and the relationship between poetry and character.He highly admired Bai Juyi's Yuefu poems and believed that Bai Juyi's poems were more than popular and simple.However,due to the differences between his time and personal experience and Bai Juyi's,he abandoned the part of Buddhism in Bai Juyi's thoughts and criticized Bai Juyi's poems like“The Song of Everlasting Sorrow”.
