Liberal education is the longest tradition of education in the west, which has a profound influence on the education of western society.A history of western education can be said to be the history of liberal education.Understanding the purpose of liberal education can be traced back to the Eudaimonia. This concept was proposed by Aristotle. It is necessary to go beyond the claim of Happiness as the purpose of liberal education and explore the real justification of Human Flourishing as the purpose of liberal education. The understanding grasp of the value and significance of liberal education should be connected with the eternal theme of the pursuit of a better life. The analysis of the historical evolution of liberal education based on the framework of educational tradition, and also the analysis of the chain of transmitted variants,is indeed helpful to understand the conflict and complexity of liberal education. As a living tradition of western education, there are five paradigms in liberal education. These paradigms are the specific ways to further understand the changes in theory and practice of liberal education, and will produce many useful enlightenment for future research on liberal education.
