On the Theoretical Study of Chinese Etymology

汉语词源学的理论研究还有许多方面要深入进行:要强调传统的汉语词源研究的基础作用和基于汉语的研究方法;词源的概念比较混乱,宜将"词源"界定为词的声音和意义的起源以及一组词(包括派生词、复合词)的共同源头,将"语源"界定为原生阶段的词的音义来源;同源词的判定标准需要继续讨论,同源词与异形词需要区分;词源学史研究需要加强,词源学理论研究要与词源学史研究相结合。

There are still many aspects that need to be further studied in the theoretical study of Chinese etymology. Emphasis should be placed on the basic role of traditional Chinese etymology research and the research methods based on Chinese language. The concepts of etymology are confused, so "ciyuan(word origin)" should be defined as the origin of sound and meaning of words as well as the common origin of a group of words(including derivatives and compound words), and "yuyuan(language origin)" be defined as the origin of sound and meaning in the primary stage. The criteria for determining cognates need to be further discussed, and cognate words and heteromorphic words need to be distinguished;Etymological history research needs to be strengthened and the study of etymology theory should be combined with the study of etymology history.
