This paper studies the appellations, including tribal names, personal names and titles, with explicit interpretations in the first volume, viz. history of the Mongols, of Jāmi al-tawārīkh(the Compendium of Chronicles), compiled by the Persian historian Rashīd al-Dīn at the start of the 14 th century. The study shows that among these appellations, some are native Mongolian words, quite a few are Turkic loanwords, while some others are Khitan and Chinese loanwords, which reveals a close ethnic communication as well as cultural borrowing and transmission between the Mongols and other neighboring ethnic groups during the Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties.
