Study on Epistemic Modal Hedges in Business English Negotiations

使用AntConc自建小型语料库和美国当代英语语料库(简称COCA)作为对比参照语料库,将商务谈判中的词汇模糊限制语的使用频次进行定量分析对比,通过对语料中的实例进行详细的词汇分析,总结出词汇模糊限制语在商务谈判语境下具有缓和语气,推动会话进行;提供变动的余地,让说话者的命题更趋于准确;避免草率决定,促进共赢实现;模糊责任,减少不稳定因素带来的负面影响的几大功能。

The frequency of epistemic modal hedges is compared through quantitative analysis by building a small corpus and selecting the American Contemporary English Corpus(COCA)as the reference corpus.The functions of epistemic modal hedges are summarized by analyzing the examples in negotiation discourses in detail.In business negotiation,epistemic modal hedges can ease the mood to promote the whole conversation,offer opportunities for changes,help achieve a win-win situation and reduce the negative impact of uncertain factors.
