Ding ware of carved design with "Chi" ornament in the Northern Song Dynasty has fine materials and workmanship are exquisite. It’s speculated to be made by the royal court with the small amount of tribute and seldom left. "Chi" pattern is a re creation of which imitates "Chi tiger" of Han Dynasty, and under the background of the trend of "returning to the ancients" in the Northern Song Dynasty. This ornament originated from the "tiger" and intended to be close to "dragon", which reflected the different cognition of auspicious beasts representing imperial power from the Han Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty. Most of white porcelain with "Chi" were used as food utensils, and the motif means "Don’t overindulge and greed".
