In A Passage to India, E.M.Foster focuses on Dr. Aziz’s criminal trial, and describes the courts, court trials, the atmosphere of the court trials, as well as the audiences, lawyers and judges participating in the court trials. The article introduces the legal development process of India during the colonial period, and discusses the racial prejudice against Indian people in the Western world represented by the United Kingdom which is reflected in the trial of Aziz. The article concludes that by the description of the trial of Aziz, the author exposed the unfairness of the legal system imposed on India by the British and the conflict between this transplanted legal system and culture and the Indian native ones, which has fully reflected the deeply-rooted racial prejudice in the laws of colonial India.
