Keep the Chinese Way: Construct an Archaeology with Chinese Characteristics,A Distinct Chinese Style, and Chinese Gravitas

百年中国考古学经历了两个发展阶段。第一阶段是将西方考古学方法和理论与中国考古实践相结合,形成中国特色的考古地层学、考古类型学、考古学文化定名说。第二阶段是从中国实际出发,产生独具中国特色的文化区系理论、社会发展理论、国家演进理论、文明模式理论。这是建设中国特色考古学的主要收获。

Chinese archaeology has gone through a 100-year developmental trajectory from 1921-2021,which in fact is a process of making a concerted effort to establish a field of archaeology with Chinese characteristics,a distinct Chinese style,and Chinese gravitas.The developmental history can be divided into two phases before and after 1979.The earlier phase was characterized by the formation of methods and theories with Chinese characteristics,such as methods of archaeological stratigraphy and typology,as well as archaeological culture naming theory,after adapting Western archaeological methods and theories to Chinese archaeological practices.The later phase was the emergence of theories with Chinese characteristics based on its realities,including theories of cultural variation and genealogy,social development,state evolution,and modes of civilization.These are significant achievements in theory and method made by Chinese archaeology in the past 100 years,and also major accomplishments of constructing an archaeology with Chinese characteristics,a distinct Chinese style,and Chinese gravitas.
