Excavation of the Daxinzhuang site jointly conducted by the Jinan City Institute of Archaeology and the Department of Archaeology and Museology,Shandong University from June to December 2010 revealed a number of important features and artifacts.Amongst them, tombs No.235 and 275 are notable in scale and hierarchy. Both tombs are buried with sacrificial victims and a number of sacrificed dogs,in addition to various bronze artifacts comprised of ding tripods,gu and jue drinking vessels,as well as bronze weaponry. This suggests that tomb occupants were likely mid-low ranking noblemen enjoying some political status and military power. The excavation of these two tombs enriches archaeological data on the Shang culture at Daxinzhuang, especially Yinxu PhaseⅢShang culture. The discovery of clan emblem inscriptions also offers new written material for study of Shang Dynasty clan organization and inter-clan relationships.
