English Translation of Mao Zedong’s Works by Way of Translation Workshop

毛泽东著作是毛泽东思想的重要载体,新时代深化其英译研究具有重要意义。译场式毛泽东著作英译是一项有计划、有组织、有系统的活动,在有效确保原文思想传达的同时,也在一定程度上存在着周期较长、成本较高等问题。许渊冲、辜正坤、李正栓等译者也曾尝试开展非译场式毛泽东诗词英译,并取得了一系列成果。对于这类英译,我们要加强质量把关,以防有损原文的思想内容和美学价值。

Mao Zedong’s works are the important carrier of Mao Zedong Thought.It is of great significance to deepen the study of their English translation in the new era.The mode of translation workshop is adopted,such as selection of expert translators throughout the country and employment of foreign experts to translate Mao Zedong’s works in an organized,planned and systematic way,which ensures the transmission of the original ideas.In a word,the mode of translation workshop can guarantee the quality of the translated works,but it also has some shortcomings.Translators such as Xu Yuanchong,Gu Zhengkun and Li Zhengshuan have also tried to translate Mao Zedong’s poems into English without using the mode of translation workshop,and accomplished remarkable achievements.As for such English translations,the quality should be strictly controlled so as to avoid damaging the ideological content and aesthetic value of Mao Zedong’s poems.
