On the Development of Chih-Tsing Hsia’s Criticism on Chinese Literature

专攻西洋文学的夏志清转向中国文学批评后,逐渐从以西方文学批评标准衡量中国文学到开始关注中国文学自身的语境,并在此语境中展开对中国文学比较全面的批评。以夏志清《中国现代小说史》为考察起点,结合夏志清对中国古典小说的研究以及对中国文学的论述,追踪夏志清从认为中国文学不够伟大到深刻体会中国文学感时忧国文学传统的文学批评发展过程,揭示其对中国文学传统的探索。夏志清中国文学批评观的发展显示了一位侨居海外多年的文学批评家对中国文学传统的体味和省思。

after C.T.Hsia,who specialized in Western literature during studying in the university,focused his literary criticism on Chinese literature,he has experienced the process from applying the Western criteria for literature criticism to criticizing the Chinese literature concerning the context of Chinese literature.Based on A History of Modern Chinese Fiction,the paper explores C.T.Hsia’s criticism on Chinese classical novels to trace the development of C.T.Hsia’s criticism view on Chinese Literature and discloses his research on Chinese literature tradition.The development of C.T.Hsia’s criticism view on Chinese Literature just reflects the contemplation on Chinese literature tradition of an overseas Chinese critic.
