The special structure and composition of erythrocyte make them more vulnerable to oxidative damage caused by free radical. In addition to the powerful enzymatic antioxidants, vitamin C is an important non-enzymatic antioxidant in erythrocytes.Vitamin C,which is digested and absorbed from food or drug,is first converted into dehydroascorbic acid(DHA)in the blood and then transported into erythrocytes by sharing the glucose transporter-1(GLUT-1)with glucose. After entering into erythrocytes,DHA is reduced to vitamin C to protect against oxidative damage. Therefore, studying the fine regulation of GLUT-1 on DHA and glucose transportation can provide new ideas for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and other related diseases.
