近代以来,在日本军政当局的推动下,香烟成为重要的军需物资,服务于日本的对外侵略战争。抗战时期,日本军政当局向侵华日军部队大量提供以"恩赐香烟"为代表的军需香烟,并以"军国美谈""军歌"等形式对军人的吸烟行为予以正面宣传,导致侵华日军部队中吸烟风气盛行。战时日军官兵对于军需香烟具有旺盛的需求,不仅是为了满足自身生理上的需要,背后也存在包括牟取经济利益在内的其他意图。从军记中所描写的日军官兵对烟的情感,立体、鲜活、真实地揭示了侵略者身处中国战地的心态与观感,不仅反映出他们精神世界的麻木与空虚,而且揭露其现实中对中国民众所宣扬的"共存共荣"的虚幻性。
