In the 1930 s,the newly discovered Jin Ping Mei attracted the attention of the academic circle, and then it was photocopied in limited quantities. The publishers in Shanghai believed that it was a big money maker and soon published typeset versions. The firstwas Zheng Zhenduo’s collation of the World Library version of Shanghai Life Bookstore, followed by Shi Zhecun’s collation of the Rare Books of Chinese Literature version of Shanghai Magazine Company and Ping Jinya’s reprint of the Rare Books of Chinese Studies version of the Central Bookstore. Publishers and academics have worked together in various ways to make the book available to the public, such as abridging, annotating, listing in"library"or"series",marking with"social novel",etc. In order to pursue economic benefits, the publishers on the one hand launched paperback, hardcover, special printing versions, carefully binding, typesetting, printing and advertising, and on the other hand published the deleted"obscene"part into pocket books for clandestine sale. Among these typeset versions,Zheng’s collation edition only involves 33 chapters, the latter two are actually Shi’s collation editions. They have the special significance of creating a new situation in the history of studies on Jin Ping Mei,especially the Shi’s collation edition, which has achieved success in both business and communication. But the practice of printing the deleted sexual related texts for clandestine sale has great harm.
