On the Double Meaning of"Fuzhen"in the Second Part of Autumn Meditations

杜甫《秋兴八首》其二“画省香炉违伏枕,山楼粉堞隐悲笳”一句,各类注本对于“伏枕”一词在此诗中的含义及其在整句诗中意义的诠释存在差异,大多观点认为“伏枕”即卧病之意,或卧病与无眠兼有之,也有观点认为应以思念帝王释之。卧病与无眠两种解释在本诗中都存在各自的合理性,且此句文法颠倒,存在多种解读的可能。杜诗意象历来复杂,结合杜甫其余作品分析,此处的“伏枕”应具卧病与无眠的双重意蕴。

Annotations on Du Fu’s poems have always had different interpretations of the second part of Autumn Meditations.Particularly speaking, there have been varying points of views on the phrase "Fuzhen". A great many annotations believe that"Fuzhen"means"being confined to bed", while some believe that it has two meanings,"being confined to bed"and"lying awake", or it can even be extended to the meaning of missing the monarch. It makes some sense either to interpret"Fuzhen"as"being confined to bed"or"lying awake". In addition, this couplet has a reversed grammatical feature and contains complex emotions, and through a combination of Du Fu’s life experience and the specific content and structure of this poem, it can be seen that the phrase "Fuzhen"is with double meanings, both"being confined to bed"and"lying awake".
