The research explores the impoliteness discourse produced by Chinese Weibo and the English Twitter users under the same hot topic discussion.By applying Culpeper\s impoliteness theory to the comparative data sets,a thorough comparative study adopting both qualitative and quantitative methods on the impoliteness of the online discourse has been undertaken. It is concluded that:a.under similar social media communication contexts, the Chinese Weibo and the English Twitter users show similar discursive characteristics in using impoliteness superstrategies;b.the Weibo and Twitter users, respectively, show significant differences in certain impolite output strategies;c.both the overall pragmatic features and the distinctive characteristics of local discourse are influenced by the dynamics of online communication context and different cultural contexts of the language communities. This study provides new findings on the comparative uses of impoliteness strategies in Chinese and English social media discourse, shedding light on people\s knowledge of the hidden forms and neglected functions in CMC(computer mediated communication).
